Tips for Mixing Recorded Vocals Like a Pro

Recorded vocals are one of the most essential aspects of song composition. The process begins with segregating the track into several parts for vocal editing and tuning. This allows each section to be fine-tuned, removing any imperfections and correcting timing issues. Once these steps are completed, the parts are mixed in a specific order and with precise timing, ultimately creating a polished music arrangement or, potentially, a hit song. However, professional vocal mixing is more complex than standard stem file mixing and requires extra effort to achieve perfection. Here are a few tips for mixing recorded vocals:

Bring in the Vocals Early

When starting a mix, think of the first tracks you add as a blank canvas. Whichever track you introduce first will have ample space to breathe. However, as the mix progresses, spaces start to fill up, and newly added tracks may not fit as seamlessly. By bringing in the vocals early, you ensure they have the necessary space in the mix, and you can process subsequent tracks to complement them.

Context is Key!

Mixing is all about context. The ultimate goal is to make all the tracks sound cohesive together. Avoid relying too much on the solo button, as it can prevent you from understanding how a track relates to the others. You might end up spending time on unnecessary adjustments that don't contribute to the overall mix.

Pre-delay is Your Friend

Pre-delay is a parameter found in almost all reverb plugins and is highly effective. By using pre-delay, you can separate the reverb from the dry vocals with a slight delay, allowing you to process them independently. This helps prevent the reverb from blending too much with the vocals, making it easier to achieve a clear and distinct sound.

Avoid Ultra-fast Attack Times

While it might be tempting to use ultra-fast attack times for vocal tracks, it's best to steer clear of them. Although they can control vocal dynamics, they can also suppress the natural impact of the vocals, resulting in a track that sounds stifled and distant. Opt for more moderate attack times to maintain the vocal's presence and clarity.

Don’t Just Compress—Automate!

Compression alone often isn’t enough to create a great vocal track. Relying solely on compression can cause important words and phrases to get lost in the mix. Instead, use compression in conjunction with automation. Both techniques are essential for ensuring that every part of the vocal track stands out as intended.
